Principal's Letter
Welcome back Jaguars!
From the day of my panel
interview, I have felt a deep connection to the Janney community. I am
grateful to become a part of the vitality, traditions and high
expectations that make our school such a unique and remarkable place.
To all those who, like me, join this year, and to those who been a part
of Janney in previous years, I look forward to a successful time
together. There will be countless joys and a few difficult challenges,
but I commit to you all of my efforts toward protecting the best
interests and promoting the growth of our children.
So
many people have spent much time and energy in our preparations for the
school year. We owe a special thanks to our summer staff - Hulon Adams
(custodian), Ann Beumel (business manager), Tawana Franklin
(paraprofessional), LaVerne Green (administrative assistant), Ronald
Hillyer (custodial foreman), Roslyn Polk (nurse), Yahrome Shorter
(custodian), and Arlene Watkins (program assistant) - for their hard
work in organizing, repairing, cleaning, and maintaining Janney. Of
course, many of our other staff members also volunteered their time and
perspective throughout the summer, culminating in a week of
team-building, orientation and professional development. I could not
be more impressed with the dedication and skill that I saw, whether it
was discussing our values, preparing unit plans or setting up
classrooms long after the sun had set.
Perhaps the best part of the summer was getting to meet some of our students. Staff and safety patrol members hosted Critical Language Program
teachers from China and Egypt who will work in schools throughout the
United States for the next year. The PreK and Kindergarten classes
held a successful orientation day that was full of curiosity and
excitement. And, as I write to you from my desk on the evening of the
21st, we are making sure everything is ready for Beautification Day
tomorrow when I am sure to see many more smiling faces.
In
the first weeks of school, we will focus on building caring and
comfortable school and classroom communities that emphasize social,
emotional and academic growth. Our Positive Behavior Support
(PBS)/Paw Prints program will act as our school-wide framework that
emphasizes clear expectations, positive recognitions and logical
consequences through discipline, not punishment. In our classrooms, we
will continue these endeavors through the Responsive Classroom model
in which students are nurtured to become strong and ethical thinkers,
for knowing children and how they learn is as important as what they
learn. We will also begin a daily community gathering, the Janney
Jamboree, designed to start the day in a positive and focused direction
- we hope you will join us (look for a weekly schedule in this
newsletter).
At home, we ask that you review the
Janney school pledge that will be included in the first Take Home
Tuesday packet (a primary means of communication that will include
bulletins, flyers, newsletters and announcements that should be
reviewed, signed and returned with your child - don't forget the Parent
Handbook in this week's THT!) and ask your student to share the
procedures they have learned in their classrooms. We also ask that you
continue to encourage the kindness, tolerance and openness makes our
community great. During the first Principal's Coffee (Monday, August
31 from 8:00 - 8:30), I will present more information about the PBS and Responsive Classroom models, and will solicit your input as to how we can enhance the culture at Janney.
On to a great start and a magnificent year!
Sincerely,

A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents
Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year. We are hitting the ground running, and want to remind you of some upcoming events: -Tuesday, September 8 at 6:45 pm is an orientation for Room Parents -Tuesday, September 8 at 7:30 pm is the First PTA Meeting in the Multipurpose Room -Thursday, September 17 from 7:00-9:00 pm is Back to School Night -Friday, September 25 from 6:00-8:00 pm is our Fall Picnic, and -Saturday, October 17 from 3:00-7:00 pm is Janney's Fall Carnival Fundraiser.
We want to thank Jimmy Corrigan and all the volunteers who spent much of their Saturday picking up trash, weeding, planting, mulching, painting and fixing up the school. And thank you to Carola McGiffert for organizing the Playdate on the Playground Sunday afternoon.
We'd also like to thank all the families who have completed and returned their All-in-One Fee form, and offer a gentle reminder/request to those who have yet to do so. The PTA helps pay for a wide range of important items, including some staff positions, books and supplies, maintenance of the field and grounds, and teacher professional development. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Thanks and have a great week!

Janney Back Alley Gate
Starting this year, the back alley gate will be closed
daily at 8:15 a.m. The primary reason is for the safety of our
students. A large number of people use Janney's property as a
shortcut, presenting a security risk. In addition, this is an
automobile entrance, not a pedestrian throughway. All staff are
required to arrive by 8:00 a.m, so no Janney related auto access should be necessary after 8:15. Gates on the 42nd Street side
of the school are open for pedestrian traffic, and for safety reasons,
are monitored beginning at 8:30 through the end of Janney Jamboree.

Janney Fall Carnival
Janney's first Fall Carnival Fundraiser will be on Saturday, October 17. We'll have fabulous rides and games, arts and crafts, food and drinks, and fun for everyone.
We'll need some help making this a great event. Volunteers for help with all aspects--big and small--of planning and carrying out the Carnival are needed. Please contacts us and let us know how you can help. Thanks very much.

Contributing to the E-Newsletter
All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we must adhere to this deadline in order to get the newsletter to you every week on time.
Please include all text in the body of your email (rather than as an
attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included
in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active
(clickable).
If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.
Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.
We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
