Principal's Letter
Thank you to the many students, alumni, parents and
community members who chipped in to make the last week a great one!
As part of Local Flavor Week, parent Lucy Smiles and the
Janney Healthy Foods Committee organized a taste test of local produce compared
to canned foods for all of our students.
Discussions occurred around healthy eating in all of our classrooms, and
a few classes enjoyed a visit from representatives of the Youth Garden,
learning about the rainbow of foods and making fruit kabobs to match. We will continue to expand the work of
this committee as it fits into our burgeoning theme of connecting student
learning to the community.
On September 23rd, Mayor Fenty hosted the
Tenleytown Library groundbreaking, which several of our classes attended. Emily Davies, a Janney alum and current
Deal Middle School student, eloquently read her editorial to the Northwest
Current on the need for a new library and received a Fenty-signed "golden
shovel" for her efforts.
Janney students also received a shovel, as well as several signed
souvenir hard hats to recognize the relationship between the library and the
Janney school.
We also began to invite several volunteer tutors into our
community, including those from the Oasis organization and the Stone Ridge and
Madeira schools. Coordinated by
Ms. Leventhal, Ms. Langford and Ms. McClung respectively, these volunteers will
work with our Janney students throughout the year to provide support in their
learning.
The week closed out with our annual Janney Fall Picnic. Thank you to Julie Slattery, Valerie
Alten, the Fall Picnic committee and the many volunteers for hosting a fun
night of food and community. I am
proud to say that I now have my first Janney sweatshirt purchased at the event!
Next week I will begin meeting with students during lunch to
review the student-generated ideas of what respect looks like in the various
spaces at Janney. At the beginning
of the year, teachers held these conversations in the classrooms as we
reestablished the positive culture of this school; these meetings will serve as
a next step in involving students voices and actions as we maintain this
culture of respect.
On Friday, we will have our first themed Spirit Day - crazy
socks day - so start digging in those drawers now. Following a morning assembly of campaign speeches, Student
Council elections will also be held for our third, fourth and fifth grade
students.
During last week's article, I
explained how the new DCPS Teaching and Learning Framework connected to student
learning. As a staff we will
begin to explore the discrete elements of that Teaching and Learning framework,
with the first of these discussions centered around promoting attention, high
levels of student engagement and interest in learning objectives and aligned
activities. This week's article on
attention relays more
about what this discrete goal looks like from a parent and students'
perspective. Future articles will
continue this trend of connecting staff, parent and student conversations
around best instructional and learning practices at Janney.
Have a fantastic week Jaguars!
Sincerely,

A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents
We hope everyone had a great time at the Fall Picnic on Friday. It was a perfect time to "make new friends" but "keep the old" ones too and get into the Janney spirit again. Many thanks to Val Alten and Julie Slattery for organizing as well a big thanks to all the volunteers who made the event a success. Our next big event is the the Janney Fall Carnival on October 17th, our first large fundraiser so pencil it in and tell friends -- it's open to everyone. We also wanted to thank the Sportswear Committee who sold a wealth of Janney items at the picnic.
Thanks and have a great week!

Soup Kitchen
Wow! We had an amazing start to the soup kitchen this month! The food brought in by parents and students was incredible. We had lots of yummy lasagnas and plenty of other food to make it a huge success. We also had four eager students there to help serve. Everything was received with lots of smiles and thank yous. Thanks to all!
**IMPORTANT NEWS FLASH - the soup kitchen (officially known as " Thrive DC ") will be moving from downtown to Columbia Heights (around 16th and Newton), consequently, there will be no food delivered in October as they will be in the middle of their move. We will resume in November. Please keep in mind that regardless of when you signed up for food on the sign up sheet in the lobby, you will always be called to confirm what you should bring and what month to bring it (you don't have to remember - and you may not have to do every month you signed up for). Thanks again, and see you in November (the Tuesday before Thanksgiving). Camille Martone

Math Counts!
Janney's MathCounts clubs offer opportunities for students to stretch and challenge their mathematical thinking. We solve problems and puzzles. We wonder about questions about numbers and space that have interested people around the world since the beginning of time. This year we will have two clubs.
The second- and third-grade MathCounts club will meet every Monday morning at 8:05 in Ms. McCrackin's room. Our first meeting will be on Monday, October 5. Dr. Langford and Ms. McCrackin will lead this club. It is open to all second- and third-graders who want to join. At 8:35 each Monday we will accompany the students to the Jamboree.
The fourth- and fifth-grade MathCounts club will meet every Wednesday afternoon from 3:15 to 4:00 in Ms. Brill's room. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, October 7. Dr. Langford and Ms. Brill will lead this club. It is open to all fourth- and fifth-grade students who want to join. At 4:00 we will dismiss the students.
There is no registration process. Students show up at the appointed time. Students need not bring any supplies; we will provide all necessary materials. If your student is unsure about his or her desire to join a MathCounts club, please feel free to join us the first few weeks to decide.

New Listserve for Parents of Kids in JED
Hi everyone,
Inspired by the creator of the new Janney School listserve, I have started a Yahoo Group for parents of kids in JED to share their questions, experiences, and ideas regarding JED and to promote communication, transparency, and accountability.
Please join at http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=Janney+Extended+Day. If the link does not work or if you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks and I look forward to lots of communication!

Contributing to the E-Newsletter
All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we must adhere to this deadline in order to get the newsletter to you every week on time.
Please include all text in the body of your email (rather than as an
attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included
in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active
(clickable).
If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.
Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.
We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
