A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

Welcome to the School Year 2010-2011!!

It was great to see so many new and familiar faces in school Monday morning.

By now most of you will have seen at least some of the new developments inside and outside the school building.  We would like to recognize the enormous efforts of the school administration, the custodial staff and the teachers in getting the school ready for our kids to begin their new year this week.  And a big thank you to Jimmy Corrigan, Ann Beumel and the huge number of volunteers who turned out on Saturday to spruce up the school and grounds.  And thank you to Julie Slattery and Kelly Lee, the new PTA co-Vice Presidents, for organizing the Playdate on the Playground Saturday afternoon.

Your PTA team has been working over the summer in anticipation of an exciting and challenging school year ahead.  But we cannot do it without you.  The many hours that our parents - and kids - put into nourishing and embellishing our school is worth just as much as the dollars that you contribute.  One of our priorities for the year is to recognize and foster the efforts of our whole community and the many different ways in which they contribute to Janney.  Last year Michele Obama set out a challenge to the students at George Washington University to provide 100,000 hours of community service.  This has prompted us to come up with a challenge of our own.

In the next week or so, you will see seven bottles appear in the school office for each of the grades in our school.  For every hour that anyone in a Janney family contributes to the school, be it in the form of spreading mulch on spruce-up day, shelving books in the library, reading to their child's class, flipping hot dogs or planning an event, we invite you to add a marble to the bottle for your child's grade.  The office staff will provide the marble.  More than one child?  See which grade needs it more!  The grade with the most marbles at the end of the year gets special recognition for their efforts!

This is not to say that your dollar contributions no longer matter.  We have an ambitious fund-raising program ahead with some old favorites making a comeback - but more on that next week.

And now for some important dates to remember:

Orientation for Room Parents - Tuesday, September 7 at 6:45 pm
First PTA Meeting in the Multipurpose Room -Tuesday, September 7 at 7:30 pm (babysitting provided)
Back to School Night -Thursday, September 16, 7:00-9:00 pm
Fall Picnic - Friday, September 25, 6:00-8:00 pm
Janney's Fall Carnival Fundraiser - Saturday, October 17, 3:00-7:00 pm.

Thanks and have a great week!

Notebusters is Now Enrolling

Notebusters is an after school vocal music experience open to children at Janney in grades 1 through 5. Notebusters is about teaching children to have fun through singing and to enjoy performing in front of a live audience. The children have weekly opportunities to gain confidence by standing up in front of their peers to sing alone or in small groups.  Children are given lots of opportunities for solo and small group performing experiences which build confidence and self assurance, and transfers to all aspects of life.

Notebusters is directed by Mr. Alex, a professional singer with the US Army Chorus; he also performs regularly in the Washington DC community and across the nation. He is assisted by Dr. Wood from Janney.

Notebusters will meet on TUESDAYS after school in the music demountable beginning September 14. Pick up is at 4:00. The fall session will run for approximately 10 weeks with a live performance for family and friends the evening of November 23, "A Soul Filled Thanksgiving" featuring greatest hits from rhythm and blues.

Enrollment forms are available in the school office.

Crossing cartoonSafety Patrol Tip of the Week
Parents, please stand in the parent designated areas on the Yuma side of the black top and wait for classes to come out of the building. Teachers will bring their classes to the same line-up spots they use at morning drop-off. Please DO NOT wait by the side or back doors of the school or gym. Thank you for your help as we implement these new procedures.
