Dear Janney Families,
This week, we continue to build our classroom and school
communities by reviewing the routines and expectations that allow learning to
take place throughout the year. Please help
us by discussing those expectations with your child/ren and by following the
rules of our public spaces, including outdoor play spaces, during as well as after
school. Rules for safety are posted around the campus. Aside from these safety rules, thank you for: -
Sending students with shoes that enable running,
climbing, and safe play; if your child needs sunscreen, thanks for applying it
in the morning before school. Also
consider sending a hat/water bottle in these warm months. We love to play outside!
-
Arriving to school on time (8:40am). We will also do our part to dismiss students
on time (3:10 PK, K and 3:15 all others) so that ballet classes and piano
lessons are not missed.
-
Abiding by parking rules, including no parking
in front of the school, in the St. Ann's lot and in the alley leading to the
back of the school. We want to be good
neighbors! Please remember that Yuma is
not a drop-off area and using it as such could put our students in danger; the
official car drop-off area is on Albemarle (in front of the school).
-
Staying to the side of the greentop/blacktop if
you arrive early for pick-up. We have
several classes that enjoy their second recess during the last period of the
day and we want to make sure they can enjoy the full play space.
-
Leaving dogs at home. Don't get me wrong--I LOVE dogs and we know
your family pet is great, but not everyone has the same feelings. To maintain safety and security for all, even
the friendliest of pets should stay at home for arrival and dismissal.
Take Home Tuesday will have several important pieces of
information. DC-CAS results will be included for students
currently in fourth and fifth grade, as will information about next week's
DC-BAS P test for third to fifth grade students. If you have not already submitted it, the
American University Field Use permission slip is also included. It is critical that we receive 100% of these
permission slips so that we can begin to use their facilities for PE and
special events as soon as possible.
Thank you for perusing the upcoming dates in this newsletter
and have a great week!
Sincerely,

A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents
We hope your kids had a great first week of school and are excited to be back among their friends.
As we mentioned last week, your PTA has been working hard to plan a year full of exciting community building and fundraising activities to fill up your calendar. Our first community building social at Guapo's was a big success and we hope to have more of these throughout the year, offering parents a night out to meet up with each other and catch up on news or just get to the end of that unfinished sentence without any interruptions! Our next social is the Fall Picnic on Friday, September 24th, from 6 to 8 pm. This year the fall picnic is being chaired by Val Alten and Melissa Fossberg. Please email them if you can volunteer some time during the picnic to sell food or help set up or clean up the event.
Our first big fund raising event of the year is the Janney Carnival, which will take place Saturday, October 16th, from 3 to 7pm. A fabulous afternoon of rides, food, music, games--and even a dunk tank is being planned. Once again we will rely on the help of all room parents in signing up volunteers for the event. Our Carnival Co-Chairs, Diane Schiff and Melissa Meierhoefer will be in touch in the weeks to come with more details. If you would like to help with carnival planning, please email them directly. Other great fundraisers we have planned this year include the ever popular book sales, a Sally Foster sale, and a spring plant sale as well as Janney's Wild casino night to brighten up those long winter nights, the spring raffle and, after a two-year hiatus, a spring auction. Carola McGiffert and Amanda Orr are chairing our new Fundraising Committee with an overview of our events and solicitations strategy. They would love to hear from you with new ideas! Next week is the first General PTA meeting of the year. Please join us in the Janney multi-purpose room on Tuesday, September 7th, at 7:30 to meet this year's PTA representatives, meet the Principal and hear about new programs and the status of construction. Babysitting is available.
A Room Parent orientation meeting will take place before the PTA meeting at 6:45. All room parents are encouraged to attend.
Thanks and have a great week! |

Construction Update
We have made two requests to the construction
team that are still pending: tents on the greentop to provide shade at recess
and moving back the fence near the library construction area. We will continue to pursue these actions with
our project manager.
Check out those foundations! The addition is beginning to take shape...
There will be a SIT Community Outreach
subcommittee meeting on Wednesday of this week
There will be a full SIT meeting on Tuesday,
September 7th.

It's Not Too Late to Enroll in JED
There's still room in JED to enroll before or after school. Contact Glen Sitney, the JED After Care Director, to register.
The JED Open House will be held from 5:30-6:30 on Sept. 13th--meet the JED Board and find out more about the program! |
Can You Spell Fun?
The Janney Scrabble Club is back. The club is open to 4th and 5th
graders and will meet in the Janney library on Thursday afternoons from
3:15 until approximately 4:30. The first session will be held on
Thursday, September 2.
Scrabble
is a great tool for learning about spelling, math, language, strategic
thinking, spatial relations and competition. It's also lots of fun. In
the club, students will learn the basics of School Scrabble, which is
played in teams of two, will learn key words from AA (a cindery lava) to
ZA (slang for pizza), and will "bingo"--that is, use all of the tiles
on their rack--with surprising regularity.
They'll also have the opportunity to play in tournaments at Janney and elsewhere in the region during the school year. And a few will go on to compete in the National School Scrabble Championship
to be held on April 15-16, 2011, in Orlando, Fla. This past spring, two
Janney alums finished third in the country in the event.
The Janney Scrabble Club is run by Janney parent Stefan Fatsis, author of the book Word Freak about the world of competitive Scrabble, with help from 2nd grade teacher Kim Bigelow.
This
year, for the first time, the club will be requesting an optional
contribution of $20 per child to help defray the cost of food and
supplies for the club and for tournaments.
Look for a flyer in your child's Take Home Tuesday folder. For further information, contact Stefan at sfatsis@gmail.com and check out the D.C. School Scrabble blog at www.dcschoolscrabble.blogspot.com. |

Calling All Student Artists
A new school year means a new Janney Directory ... and a new cover design. Please submit your original drawing(s) and you may just see your own masterpiece on the cover this year!! Take a few moments to draw something about school--a jaguar, the school building, your classroom, or whatever else says "Janney" to you. We strongly recommend vertical pictures done in black and white, though these are not requirements. Place your submission in the Janney PTA box by Friday, September 17th, marked to the attention of Rennie Anderson or Anita Seline, and feel free to direct any questions to us as well. In addition to the directory cover, submissions will also be considered for use in the inside pages of the directory, the Janney yearbook, or even new Janney sportswear designs, so get inspired and get drawing! |
Janney Band
There's still time to join the Janney Band and have fun making music with your friends. The Janney Band is for 4th and 5th graders. It rehearses on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 7:45 a.m. in the gym. We offer beginning and continuing instruction on the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and percussion.
We would love to have children who play other instruments to join too, provided they take private lessons on their instruments. If you're interested or have questions, come to the Janney gym on one of the rehearsal mornings or contact Sterling Scroggins.

Contributing to the E-Newsletter
All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com.
The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the
newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we
must adhere to this deadline.
Material in the newsletter must be: 1) For the benefit of Janney students; 2)
Related to activities or programs that take place on Janney school
grounds, or for specific Janney-sponsored events or programs; 3) From and for not-for-profit organizations (unless #1 and #2 above are satisfied, and approved by both PTA presidents); and 4) Submitted by an official representative of the organization or program referenced.
Inclusion
in the newsletter is at the discretion of the newsletter editors, the
PTA presidents, and the principal. Please include all text in the body
of the email (rather than as an
attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included
in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active
(clickable).
If a notice should be run for more than one week,
please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the
notice by the Friday deadline for each week.
Please note there
is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter
submissions can be turned in. Prepared fliers to be included in the
Take Home Tuesday envelope should be turned into the school office by
COB Monday.
Thank you for your cooperation.
