Counselor's Corner Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY)- Grades 2-5:
Brochures concerning Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth are available from Mrs. Leventhal. Students who scored at or above the 97th percentile in the most recent nationally standardized aptitude or achievement test are eligible. Their percentile can be on one of the subtests for verbal or mathematics reasoning or on the total score. Registration for the talent search application can also be done online at www.cty.jhu.edu.
This is a fee based testing service to determine if your child qualifies for enrichment courses offered in suburban Washington or Baltimore locations. Financial aid is available. For parents who would like more information, contact Mrs. Leventhal.
Attendance and Tardiness:
Please review the following attendance and tardiness guidelines. School doors open at 8:35 a.m. Students are considered late for class when they are not in their classrooms by 8:45 a.m. Students are not to be in the building before 8:35 a.m. unless they are enrolled in a before school program such as band, safety patrol and JED or are having breakfast. Coming to school on time is crucial. Students that arrive late start their day behind and do not have a chance to settle in with their classmates before their learning day begins. It can leave them in a "catch up" mode for the rest of the day, not a good mode for learning. Please have your children arrive on time (at 8:35 a.m.) or arrive early and play on the playground before school with parental supervision.
When a student is absent, parent/s or guardian/s need to call the office to notify the school before 9 a.m with an explanation of the absence. If the school has not been notified, the parent/s will receive a phone call informing them of the student's absence. When a student returns to school, a written note explaining the absence is needed. Absences are excused for illness, family emergency, death in the family, and religious holidays. If a student is ill for three or more consecutive days, a note is needed from the child's doctor to clear the student to return to school Absences for special family events or holidays, need to be submitted in writing in advance and approved by the principal or else they are recorded as unexcused. Ten unexcused absences in a grading period requires a court referral. It is important to make every effort to help your child have good attendance and to arrive at school on time. Please call Mrs. Leventhal or the main office for any questions about attendance or tardiness at (202) 282-0110.
Parent Encouragement Program (PEP):
PEP offers classes on parenting throughout the year. Lectures and classes that are coming up include:
Hal Runkel who will give two talks in PEP's Noted Parenting Author Series: Tuesday, Nov. 8, 7:30-9:00 pm, at Bullis School, and Wednesday, Nov. 9, 9:30-11:30 am, at the Women's Club of Chevy Chase. Motivating Children to Do Their Best, Wednesday, 10/26/11, 7:30 - 9:30pm, Kensington For more information about upcoming courses or classes, contact PEP at www.pepparent.org or (301) 929-8824

Nordic Food Day! Order Hot Lunch For Your Kids Tomorrow, Wednesday October 26th!
D.C. Public Schools is kicking off a new four-part initiative to expose students to international food and culture. Wednesday, Oct. 26, is Nordic Food Day. Janney (and all DCPS students) will be treated to authentic Nordic dishes, representing the countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The menu will include Swedish meatballs, Norwegian salmon, Finnish rye bread and Icelandic-inspired skyr, along with Danish-inspired open-faced sandwiches.
The purpose of Nordic Food Day is to expose students to new, nutritious and appetizing foods in school while encouraging them to recreate the recipes with their parents or guardians at home. A Nordic cookbook with easy recipes will be distributed to students on the day of the event.
Ask your kids about their experience on Wednesday! Ask if they can name a Nordic country! What was their favorite part of the meal?

REMEMBER: Janney Politics and Prose Book Fair is This Weekend!
On October 29th and 30th, Politics and Prose will donate 20% of its sales to Janney. The event is an important fundraiser for Janney and a great opportunity to stock up for the holidays, fulfill teachers' classroom wish lists, and fill our new library's shelves. Those who donate to the library or a classroom will get to put a book plate in the front of the donated book - imagine your child's pride when they show their friends the books they donated!
Our principal, Norah Lycknell, will be reading at the store on Sunday at 1 pm. Please spread the word to your friends and families, especially those outside the Janney community who might not otherwise hear of the event. Also, if you are interested in volunteering at the book fair, please email . |

Five for the Janney Auction
Can you make 5 calls for the Janney Auction? Can you spare just a few minutes of time to make 5 calls to local businesses to solicit donations for the Janney Auction? This is a small time commitment that would be a huge help! I will provide you with the names and contact information of the businesses, as well as a script you can use to make the pitch -- all you need to do is make the call. If you can help, please contact Carola McGiffert. Thank you! |
Parent Coffee Socials are Underway
These gatherings are something new this year and the intent is purely social, a time for parents to connect with one another. We will hold a fall and a spring "coffee" for each grade. Grab a cup of joe, in the cafeteria, after morning drop off and say hello to your fellow class parents or arrange that playdate your child has been asking for! The first will be held this week, Thursday, Oct. 27th for PreK parents and next week, Tuesday, Nov. 1st for K. The first grade coffee social is scheduled for Thursday, November 10th. We will publish the rest of the calendar when it is finalized. Alisa GogartyRoom Parent Coordinator |
Attention Janney Parents We Need Your Prom Pictures!
Janney Parents:
Time to rumage through that old trunk and dig out your high school prom pictures! As you may know, the theme of Janney Auction 2012 is 1980s prom -- and that means we need to know what you wore to that special dance (in whatever decade it took place). Scan your favorite prom pic and email it to me as soon as possible. Pictures will make a collage in the program. AND whoever can identify the most Janney parents in their prom dress/duds wins a prize!

JANNEY MUSICAL Attention 4th and 5th Graders
This year our 4th and 5th graders will be telling the tale of the Princess and the Pea in the show Once Upon a Mattress. So save the dates - February 24-25, 2012 - and save your Halloween costumes for kings, queens, knights, princesses, wizards and jesters! Auditions will be on November 28th and 29th after school. In a few weeks, students will come home with information sheets about the show and parent volunteer forms to help with the production. Looking forward to another fun show! Ginny Curtin |
Janney Directories are Here!
The Janney Directory is hot off the presses and ready to go to work for booking playdates, recruiting volunteers, and otherwise being generally useful in your lives. You should have received your copy (plus any extra(s) you ordered) in last week's Take Home Tuesday packet of your oldest/only Janney child. Please check your listing carefully and send us any changes/corrections as soon as possible so we can print a correction sheet in the next few weeks. Also, extra copies of the directory -- which come in very handy for the car, office, etc. -- are available for purchase for $10 each. We'll be setting up at pick up/drop off as often as we can (weather permitting) this week. Please bring exact change or a check to "Janney PTA." Finally, congratulations to Bruno Mila, whose drawing of the new Janney atrium is on the cover of this year's directory, as well as all of the student artists who submitted the pieces you will enjoy throughout the book.
