A Note from the PTA Presidents

Dear Janney Parents,

We hope everyone enjoyed the costume parade on the new turf field, especially the awesome Thriller rendition by the Janney teachers and staff.   What talented dancers!!
Please join us next Wednesday night (the 9th) for our second PTA-Community meeting at 7:30 pm.  Babysitting will be provided. We will hammer out PTA business off the top and then divide into groups to discuss the 4th and 5th grade reading and writing and math curriculum.

Special thanks to Alissa Lash, Jacquie Ehrlich, Lauren Case, Jen Del Guercio and their army of volunteers for another successful book fair at Politics and Prose. And a shout out to all teachers and staff who volunteered their time to read to the kids at the bookstore. A lot of fun on a rainy afternoon.

Lastly, thanks for the great turnout at the Book Fair!  We are pleased to report the tremendous response.  We surpassed our 2009 sales (last year's fair was competing with Jon Stewart's Rally) and bought over 700 titles, not counting any duplicates.   Total Book Fair sales were $11, 575.  All together we raised $2,295 for Janney, as well as added many new books to the library!

Thanks,

Kelly Lee and Julie Slattery

JED Board Nominations Still Open

The Janney Extended Day Board invites the Janney community to submit Board nominations by this Wednesday, November 2 and to vote in the November 15th election.

Elections for four Board vacancies (including Treasurer) will be held on November 15th. Anyone in the Janney community is eligible to volunteer for the JED Board and vote in the election. The Board oversees JED's policy and financial functions and has eight members who serve two-year terms. Members meet once per month and spend 3-6 hours per month on Board activities. Share Your Passion
Calling Club Leaders!!

Do you have a skill or a hobby or a passion that you would love to share with kids?  Please consider volunteering to lead a lunch-time club at Janney!  Here is an opportunity to spend time doing your favorite hobby with a bunch of kids who share your interests, or to give kids a chance to experience something new!

The next session of clubs will start in January and club leaders are needed to make this program a success. Lunch time clubs meet once a week from 12-1 and include kids from a range of grades that you can specify. These clubs afford students the opportunity to participate in an activity that would otherwise not be part of the school day. Last year some of our most successful clubs were run or co-led by parents: robotics, art, romance languages, logic games and Rubik's cubes, and film making.

If you would like to run a club but are not sure on a theme, or would like to help out with an existing club, we would love to hear from you too!  We have lots of ideas to inspire you!
To volunteer or for more information, contact Linda Sell at linda.sell@dc.gov.
