A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

Dear Janney Parents,

We hope everyone has recovered from last week's very busy and fun Halloween!

Please don't forget, tomorrow night (11/9) at 7:30 is our second Community Meeting of the year. In addition to the general PTA update, the meeting will focus on the 4th and 5th grade curriculum. The fourth and fifth grade teachers will be giving parents an overview of reading and writing and of the Everyday Math curriculum.  Babysitting will be provided at the Community Meeting. Also, back by popular demand, the PTA will be hosting another parent social at Guapos on November 17th! Please stop by for a drink and a quesadilla and have a chance to connect with other Janney folks!

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving and the December holidays are just around the corner. We are happy to announce, just in time for the holidays,  that we will be bringing back the Janney Winter Fair on Saturday, December 10th (during the day).  For those of you who are not familiar with the Winter Fair, children, (teachers) parents and outside vendors may purchase a table (at a nominal charge) to sell their own home-made goods or products (in the cafeteria)! Please stay tuned for more information, or (if you want to rent a table or volunteer), please contact event Chair, Marie Koczela at janneydisplay@aol.com. Also, (in December we will begin secret snowflake) stay tuned for more information regarding our always popular Secret Snowflake program. This program gives parents an opportunity to "adopt" a staff member, and lavish them with surprise goodies in the weeks leading up to winter break. Sam Corrigan, event Chair, will be sending out details soon. If you have any questions, or want to sign up now, you can reach Sam at scorrigan4@gmail.com.

Have a great week!

Thanks,
Another successful Mini-walk for the Homeless!

Thanks to the wonderful Janney community, over 550 snack packs were put together by our students at our Mini-walk for the Homeless last Friday.  One of the things I love about our community is how responsive our families are to efforts to help others in the DC area and overseas.  From signing registration forms, to donating snacks, to participating in the walk, you are the best!

With many thanks,
Shana Zallman

The Janney Scrabble Club will host its first tournament of the year on Saturday, Nov. 19, 9:30am-3pm in the cafeteria. About 40 students in grades 4 through 8 from Janney, Deal and Northern Virginia are expected.

In School Scrabble, players compete in teams of two. The teams will be divided into three divisions based on experience and ability. Everyone will play four games with a maximum time per game of 45 minutes. We'll break for a pizza lunch. Awards ceremony to follow.

The tournament will be run by Janney parent and Scrabble club director Stefan Fatsis, the author of Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive Scrabble Players. For more information about the event, and about the Janney Scrabble Club, please visit  www.dcschoolscrabble.blogspot.com.

Parent Coffee Socials

The coffee socials are in full swing this month!  They are held in cafeteria after morning drop off, from 8:45ish-9:30am.  These grade level socials are a great way to meet new parents, connect with friends and enjoy a hot cup of coffee!  Thanks to all of the room parents for helping to organize and providing coffee and breakfast treats!  The schedule is as follows, with 5th grade not scheduled yet, but likely in early December:

Grade 1, Thurs. Nov. 10
Grade 2, Thurs. Nov. 17
Grade 3, Tues.  Nov. 15
Grade 4, Weds. Nov. 30

Thanks!
Room Parent Coordinator
