A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

Dear Janney Families:

We wish everyone a safe and wonderful winter break!

Just a reminder, International Night is just around the corner, Jan. 19th. We are fortunate at Janney to have such a diverse community, this is a fun evening for the entire family to experience, first hand, some of the many cultures from around the world!

See you in 2012!

Janney Wine Tasting

Mark your calendars for the Janney Wine Tasting!

Why: To benefit Janney School and collect wines for the school auction

When: Friday, January 6th from 7-9:30 pm at the home of Kiki and Joe McLean

How it Works: Come join fellow Janney parents as we taste wine, cheese and other goodies.  Please bring 2 bottles of your favorite wine (suggested in the 10-15 dollar range).  One of the bottles will be consumed at the party; the other will be auctioned off at the Janney School Auction as part of a wine package.

Responses by January 3rd are appreciated for planning purposes, but not mandatory.

Counselor's Corner
Attendance and Tardiness

We would like to streamline the procedures for absences and make sure that your child's attendance is recorded accurately.  If your child will be out of school, please send an email to Mrs. Watkins and Ms. Lycknell  and cc: Mrs. Leventhal stating that your child is absent due to illness, religious holiday, medical appointments or a death in the family.  If your child is out ill for five days consecutively, you will need to bring in a doctor's note when your child returns to school  You will also need to bring documentation for absences due to doctor's appointments.

If your child will be out due to travel for a vacation, family gathering or other special event, you will need to email Ms. Lycknell prior to the absence requesting her to excuse the absence.  We appreciate your help in ensuring that we are complying with DCPS guidelines for attendance. Contact the school by email if your child will be out of school.  Ask for permission to have an absences excused if it is not due to illness, religious holiday or death in the family, prior to the absence.  Finally please ensure that your child arrives for school on time.  We start school at 8:35 a.m. and your student is late when they arrive after 8:45 a.m. Our attendance is monitored by DCPS downtown and they evaluate our school and our attendance plan based on how well we do with our attendance and tardiness.  Good attendance and coming to school on time are important life skills that benefit your child and our school. Please help us by informing the school of any absences, following the guidelines above, and get your child to school on time.

Health and Safety During the Holidays

Edible Ornaments
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Serves: 1 (1 serving per cracker)

  • Low-fat or fat free cream cheese
  • Water crackers (circle-shaped)
  • Colorful veggies (such as peas, diced peppers, carrot slices and celery stems)

  • Spread low-fat or fat free cream cheese on water crackers.
  • Top each with colorful veggies.
Holiday Fire Safety
As you prepare for the holidays, take the following safety precautions.Decorations
  • If you buy a live tree, place away from heat sources. Heat dries the needles and makes them easier to catch fire.
  • Always keep your tree stand filled with water.
  • Only buy artificial trees if they are labeled "Fire Resistant" or "Flame Retardant."
  • Check holiday lights each year for excessive wear. Replace if the wires are frayed or the sockets are cracked.
  • Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet.
  • Do not link more than three strings of lights (unless the label notes it is safe to do so) so as not to overload electrical outlets.
  • Never put wrapping paper in a fireplace. It can result in a very large fire, throwing off dangerous sparks and embers that may result in a chimney fire.
  • Avoid using lit candles. If you do use them, be sure to use sturdy candle holders and place them out of the reach of children.
Holiday Entertaining
  • When cooking for guests, stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the stove.
  • Cook with pots and pans on back burners to keep them out of toddlers' reach.
  • Place hot liquids and foods in the center of the table.
  • Place space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can catch fire, such as curtains.
  • Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Establish a "Kid-Free Zone" around fireplaces, including gas fireplaces, and wood burning stoves. Glass fire screens can get very hot.
Visit SafeKids for additional fire tips.
