A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents
Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year!

It was an especially exciting first week back to school! Not only were the children, staff and parents, taking in the grandeur of our new building, but we were able to experience an historic DC earthquake.   I'm sure you all were greeted Tuesday afternoon with many exciting earthquake stories from your children. It will surely prove to be a memorable first week back to school for all!

As many of you nervously observed in the weeks leading up to the start of school, there was much to accomplish before we could open the doors on Aug. 22nd. We would like to recognize herculean efforts of the school administration, the teachers, and the custodial staff for getting our new, beautiful school ready to open on time!

Your PTA team has been working over the summer in anticipation of an exciting and challenging school year ahead.  But we cannot do it without you.  There are so many ways to get involved. For a list of volunteer opportunities and contacts, please go to our home page at janneyschool.org. Also, please don't forget to complete the student support fee form. This form was sent in your summer mailing and is available on our website. We ask that everyone give as generously as possible!

This fall will be very busy at Janney! We have several important events and fundraisers coming up. The first one is the 5% Day at Whole Foods on August 31st! Janney receives 5% of everything that is sold that day. We can really make an impact by shopping at Whole Foods on Wednesday!

Another key event this fall is the First Annual Janney 5K and Fun Run. The 5K committee has been working hard to make this a fun and profitable way to spotlight our renovated school!  You can now register for the race at janney5k.com ! Please spread the word, we are looking for sponsors and runners alike, the race is open to anyone!

In the next couple of weeks we have several key events planned, So please be sure to mark your calendars!

Shop for Janney at Whole Foods Tomorrow

On Wednesday, August 31, the Tenley Whole Foods will donate 5% of its entire store sales to the Janney PTA.
Please help us make this first fund-raiser of the year a smashing success by planning a shopping trip tomorrow and asking your friends and neighbors to shop as well. Tomorrow is a great time to shop for Labor Day weekend cookouts, buy some local peaches, pick up lunch or an afternoon snack, and stock up on pantry staples like pasta, canned tomatoes, beans, spices, wine, beer, olive oil, and anything else that your family likes.

Janney cookbooks and aprons will also be on sale all day at the store. Look forward to seeing you all there!

New Parent PTA Coffee

We would like to invite all new parents to a coffee in the cafeteria immediately after drop off on Friday, 9/2. This is a great opportunity to meet other new folks and make some new connections. Members of the PTA will be there to answer any questions you may have.

Janney Scrabble Club

The Janney Scrabble Club is back! The club is open to 4th and 5th graders and will meet on Thursdays in the library from 3:15 until approximately 4:30. No fee is required.

Our first, introductory session will be held this week, on Thursday, Sept. 1.

The club is run by Janney parent Stefan Fatsis, author of the book "Word Freak" about the subculture of competitive Scrabble. If your child is interested in participating, or if you have any questions, please email Stefan

Janney Band

Dear Fourth and Fifth Graders,

There's still time to join the Janney Band and have fun making music with your friends.  The Janney Band rehearses on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:45 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. in the gym.  We offer beginning and continuing instruction on the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and percussion. We would love to have children who play other instruments to join too, provided they take private lessons on their instruments. If you re interested or have questions, come to the Janney music room on one of the rehearsal mornings or contact Sterling Scroggins.

Help Janney by Saving Box Tops for Education

box tops
Ever notice those pink "Box Tops for Education" labels on groceries like Cheerios, Ziploc, Hefty, Pillsbury and other brands?  Please cut them out and save for Janney.  Each label is worth 10 cents PLUS contributions are matched by Susan Jaquet, a local realtor.  Last year all those little pink labels earned Janney almost $1,000!  When you get a stack, put them in a bag or envelope and drop them in the pink "Box Tops for Education" bin near the Janney front door.

A few tips:
- Trim
the Box Tops before you submit them (your kids can help!)
- Be sure each Box Top shows a valid expiration date
