A Note from the PTA Presidents Dear Janney Families,
We hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend. First off, thanks to all of you for shopping at Whole Foods last week. Your generosity paid off - Whole Foods is donating $6,800 to Janney!
And a special thank-you to Anne Prince & Kate Laguarda for making this day such a whopping success. Also a huge thank-you to the many volunteers who handed out fliers, sold cookbooks and shopped. These proceeds will support Janney's new garden and outdoor play space.
Join us tonight for our first Community/PTA meeting at 7:30 pm in the cafeteria. Babysitting is provided and the agenda is below:
1) Opening by PTA Presidents and Principal - goals for the year and explaining the new meeting format;
2) Split into two groups (parents choose which group they will attend):
- Creative Curriculum Overview by Christopher/Overview of What Parents Should Look For in a PreK program by Cheryl Ohlson/Q&A with the PreK team
- ANET Overview by Amrutha/Why We Assess Students by Linda Sell/Q&A with the Third Grade team
3) Return to Whole Group for Overview
4) PTA Business
Don't forget the Room Parent Orientation at 6:45pm (babysitting will be available for this meeting as well).
Thanks - look forward to seeing you! Kelly Lee and Julie Slattery |

Thank you for Supporting Janney at the Whole Foods 5% Day
Many, many thanks to everyone who turned out to shop at Whole Foods on Janney's 5% Day. Thanks to the constant stream of Janney families, friends, and neighbors arriving at the store, and the full shopping carts leaving the store, the day raised $6,800 for Janney's new gardens and outdoor play areas. Thank you for everything you did to get the word out and to work a special shopping trip into your own busy schedules. Many thanks as well to the volunteers who turned out in force to promote the 5% Day and sell cookbooks at the store:
Jennie Bonney, Fran Brennan, Sally Buzbee, Kim Curtis, Emily Gustafsson, Marie Koczela, Katharine Landfield, Carola McGiffert, Zoryana Morhun, Amanda Orr, Roslyn Polk, Elizabeth Rankin, Diane Schiff, Lucy Smiles, Amy Thompson, and Lorette Voglmayr. And finally, thanks to the Janney students and alumni who did a fabulous job handing out flyers and wearing those sandwich boards: Emma Buzbee, Meg Buzbee, Pablo Laguarda, Brendan Landy, Jamie Landy, Charlie Price, Bennie Thompson, Charlie Thompson, and Alexander Voglmayr (our apologies if we've missed anyone else). You guys were great!
Kate Laguarda & Anne Prince

What's on Display? New Display Cases Now Available
Thanks to our wonderful renovation the display case has a new look! We now have a built-in display area behind glass shelves near the front entrance to the multipurpose room. For those new to Janney, the Janney Display Case is a long-standing tradition that allows students to showcase their various collections. We have had great displays of rocks, baseball cards, snow globes, Lego creations, stuffed animals and whatever else creative imaginations collect! Students must include a short explanation as to why their collection is significant to them. Hopefully this explanation will help others better appreciate the display. Please note, the display contents in no way carry any official endorsement from DCPS.
If your child would like to put a special collection or item on display, please complete the form near the case or email janneydisplay@aol.com with your child's name, class, and a short statement as to why the collection is special to your child. Thanks for sharing.

Help Janney by Saving Box Tops for Education Ever notice those pink "Box Tops for Education" labels on groceries like Cheerios, Ziploc, Hefty, Pillsbury and other brands? Please cut them out and save for Janney. Each label is worth 10 cents PLUS contributions are matched by Susan Jaquet, a local realtor. Last year all those little pink labels earned Janney almost $1,000! When you get a stack, put them in a bag or envelope and drop them in the pink "Box Tops for Education" bin near the Janney front door. A few tips: - Trim the Box Tops before you submit them (your kids can help!). - Be sure each Box Top shows a valid expiration date.
