Dear Janney Families,
Having just participated in the Class of 2011 Mobile Dedication and Celebration, I am filled with Jaguar pride. Working with artist (and former Janney parent) Kevin Reese, our most recently promoted class created a Calder-inspired mobile as their class gift, a piece that now hangs in the atrium. Members of the current fifth grade joined the Class of 2011, featured speakers Nina Matthews '11 and Mabel Malhotra '12, and the Notebusters to celebrate the installation. Our thanks to those participants, lead teachers Laure Hunter, Mary Osterman and Jackie Seward, Karen Harris who helped to secure the grant for the project, and Coby Cohen '11 and Isaac Boris '11 who brought out their Jamboree skills to set up the sound system. A fabulous community effort!
This week also marks the Student Council campaign period with speeches delivered on October 6th at 1:30 (parents of candidates are welcome to attend) followed by voting in grades 2-5. Our third-fifth graders will take the first round of ANET assessments on October 4th (reading) and October 5th (math); these untimed assessments typically take just over an hour each day, with lower grades continuing on their normal schedule and testing grades returning to their regular schedule at 11am. The week concludes with the first monthly Principal's Coffee of the year. On October 7th at 8:15am, parents are welcome to join me in the atrium for an informal discussion. Bring your questions and comments!
Sincerely,
Norah Lycknell

The Facts
Parent Conference Sign Ups, Construction Update, Drop-Off Lane, Recess Gear and No Nuts
- October 17th Parent conference sign ups will be posted at 7pm on October 5th at www.janneyschool.org. Please make sure to reload your Janney homepage at that time to see the link. Conference slots last for 15 minutes from 12pm - 7pm. While we realize the time can feel a bit rushed, the DCPS calendar limits us to this day and time, and our teachers work tirelessly to hold efficient and meaningful conversations. Should all slots fill (a likelihood only with our largest classes) or should you require an alternate time, please contact your classroom teacher directly. Don't forget - our service providers and special subject teachers have sign up sheets as well!
- The construction team has provided another schedule update; with such a rainy month, many of these dates are adjusted from those provided in my September 19th letter. I continue to work with the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM), DCPS, and members of the SIT team to monitor the remaining construction process:
- 10/4 or 10/5 - Kitchen: The day after the Dept. of Health inspection now scheduled for Oct 4th or Oct 5th (delayed due to a faulty freezer coil)
- 10/4 or 10/5 - Multipurpose Room (remaining work includes trim, paint and other finishing details)
- PreK play area is complete.
- 10/10 - Pre-K play area, B-Ball court, Big Kid play area, paved access to Kitchen, and surface parking
- 10/31 - The garage is complete except for electrical and plumbing final inspections currently scheduled for Oct 5th. There is one additional DCRA Zoning Office inspection which requires a formal DCRA resubmission of the garage. The zoning inspection should be completed for the garage use by Oct 31st.
- 10/28 - Interior work complete
- 10/28 - Soccer field and upper terrace
- 11/7 - Lower terrace
- With all these rainy days, many of our families have been taking advantage of our drop-off lane at arrival. We invite you to pull up just beyond the crosswalk and to allow us to escort your student(s) out of the car. For those waiting for the escort, please remain in your car, keeping the crosswalk clear, until the line proceeds forward. Because the south side of Albemarle is a no-parking zone from 7am - 5pm, please do not park or leave your car unattended in the drop-off lane; the local police department and parking enforcement officials often circulate at arrival, particularly in bad weather. We are happy to provide this drop-off service and thank you for helping us to keep our students safe!
- Please remember that we work and play hard - don't forget footwear, raingear and coats that can tolerate recess in all weather!
- As a quick reminder, we are a nut-free school. If a product has nuts in the ingredients list, please choose another snack or lunch.

A Publishing Party by Samantha Post
![publishing party]() | | Publishing Party in 2-P |
On Friday morning Room 209 had it's first Writer's Workshop publishing party! For the first six weeks of school, student writers worked incredibly hard brainstorming, drafting, editing and revising a story about a moment in their lives. After going through the entire writing process, students shared their final result with their parents and classmates. In small groups students took turns reading their stories out loud. After each reading, every listener in the group complimented the writer on something about his or her writing. At the end, we had a brief gallery walk where everyone could read through their classmates' final published copies. Afterward, many students shared that although they were nervous at first about sharing their work, by the end of the party they felt "proud," "happy," and "so good that I blushed." Thanks to all of the parents, as well as Ms. Khuu and Ms. Lycknell for joining us in this wonderful celebration of our writing!
