School Improvement Team (SIT) 2008-20092009-2010 ELECTIONS - 3 positions are open. If you are interested in running for a two-year term on the LSRT (formerly the SIT), please submit a one-paragraph biography to us no later than Thursday April 23. We will include candidates and their biographies in the April 28 PTA newsletter. The LSRT election will be held on Friday May 1, during drop-off, pick-up, and at the Spring Picnic. Bios should be sent to PTA Presidents, Rennie Anderson and Lucy Smiles. News At a Press Conference at Janney on March 16th, Mayor Fenty announced that both re-building the Tenleytown library and building a Janney addition will move forward independently, with both projects to likely break ground in 2009. A multi-purpose development may still be possible above the library, but that project will not move forward at this time. Details regarding specifics about the Janney addition, such as will underground parking be part of the plan and will Janney students be able to continue to go to school on Janney land during all phases of the construction (swing in space), still need to be worked out. Meetings between Janney representatives (members of the SIT, PTA and the school Principal) and Alan Lew of the Mayor's office are expected soon. The SIT will continue to advocate for a Janney facility that will meet the current and future needs of our community. To read more about the Janney Development issue, click here. What is the SIT? The Janney School Improvement Team, or SIT (also known as a Local School Restructuring Team, or LSRT) is composed of the principal, six teachers, six parents, a student representative, and, at times, a community representative. Responsibilities of the SIT include: developing the local school management plan, receiving and making recommendations to the school plan, monitoring and assessing the implementation of the school plan, ensuring compliance with established guidelines, contract, and board rules, and using assessment results to develop specific strategies for school improvement. The SIT is also responsible for advising the principal on matters of school policy including (but not limited to) allocation of resources; school organization, curriculum options, maintenance and improvement of buildings and grounds, funding of equipment and supplies, priorities for staffing patterns, and monitoring student progress. SIT meetings are held monthly and are open to the Janney community for observation. Parent representatives are elected by parents, and teacher representatives by teachers. Elections are held in the spring. Terms are for two years and are staggered to ensure continuity.
