School Improvement Team (SIT)

WHAT IS THE JANNEY SIT?

Janney has been scheduled for a major capital improvement in the upcoming fiscal year. These improvements will include both an addition and modernization of the existing facility. DCPS policy requires that a School Improvement Team (SIT) be established to participate in the development of the education specification and schematic design for the school. The SIT is expected to exist through the end of construction and be available to receive updates, consult on issues that arise during construction, and disseminate information to the community.

To read a full description of the SIT and its responsibilities, click here.

Please note - The SIT Committee that existed prior to April 2009 has been renamed the Local School Restructuring Team (LSRT).

DESIGNS FOR A NEW JANNEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Phase I of construction has begun at Janney. View the most recent designs available for the Janney addition and modernization project by clicking HERE (13 pages). Please Note, these plans have ben updated since November, but the newest plans are not available electronically.

The designs posted above represent the most recent draft designs (11/10/2009) presented to the SIT committee by the DC Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) and the project architects, Deveroux and Purnell. Additional alterations to the plans in response to SIT comments and more extensive landscape plans are expected. The builder in charge of the project will be Winmar-Dustin.

Janney students are expected to remain in the building, in the existing demountables and on the grounds during construction with the understanding that a significant proportion of the outdoor playspace will be unavailable during the phases of construction.

OPEFM and the architects presented a revised plan at a community meeting on December 15th. The Community Project Brief distributed at that meeting is available here. In the 2 weeks before spring break, preparations will be made for moving two of

Phase I of the project has begun. To see a map of the campus during Phase 1, click here. Janney's two demountable trailors have been moved to the Janney field and their former locations have been fenced off for safety purposes. See the demountable moving plan here. The lower school playground equipment has also been moved to the Janney field space.

In May the west side of the Janney campus will be fenced off to allow for construction to begin and certain trees will be removed. To picture this fence draw a line from Albemarle past the west door to the building, around the back of the building to the west side of the gym and continue that line to the south property line of the school behind the lower school play equipment. Play space will be greatly impacted and aternative play space and PE space is being researched by parents and Janney staff. Phase I will continue through December 2010 at which time the new western part of the building is scheduled to be completed.

Phase II will commence in January 2011 and go through August 2011. To see a map of the campus during Phase 2, click here. During Phase II the back (south side) of the building will be fenced off to allow for construction of the underground parking lot and new field. Music and 4th grade classrooms will be out of demountables and in classrooms in the building. Demountables on the existing soccer field will be removed and that field will be mulched and open for use. Modernization of the existing building will take place during the summer of 2011 when children are not in the building. All construction is scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2011-12 school year.

The Janney SIT has compiled an extensive list of frequently asked questions on the construction and modernization process. To read them, click here. Comments on the plans can be submitted to the SIT at this address: JanneyDesignComments@yahoo.com. All Janney SIT members will have access to these emails. To facilitate compilation of the comments, please consider framing your thoughts along the following categories: site, building, construction planning, and overall impressions/other.

JANNEY LISTED AS A HISTORIC LANDMARK

The Janney School was listed as a historic landmark by the Historic Preservation Review Board on November 19, 2009. As a landmark, Janney is subject to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) as administered by the State Historic Preservation Office (District of Columbia office) and the DC Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB).

JANNEY RENOVATIONS AND THE TENLEY LIBRARY

Mayor Fenty has announced in June 2009 that the Janney addition would move forward independently of the Tenleytown library project. The Tenley Library will use a portion of the Janney field for construction staging purposes. The library is expected to be completed by December 2010.
