DESIGNS FOR A NEW JANNEY

View designs for the Janney addition and modernization project by clicking HERE (13 pages).

We are closing in on the final design stages of the project and these designs represent months of conversation, planning and revisions. The designs posted above represent the most recent draft designs (11/10/2009) presented to the SIT committee by the DC Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) and the project architects, Deveroux and Purnell. Additional alterations to the plans in response to SIT comments and more extensive landscape plans are expected. Comments can be sent to the SIT at JanneyDesignComments@yahoo.com. All Janney SIT members will have access to these emails. To facilitate compilation of the comments, please consider framing your thoughts along the following categories: site, building, construction planning, and overall impressions/other.

OPEFM and the architects presented a revised plan at the community meeting on December 15th. The Community Project Brief distributed at that meeting is available here. OPEFM presenteda tentative schedule for the project that included: a ceremonial ground breaking for the addition project on January 6, 2010; a Commission of Fine Arts Review Hearing on January 21, 2010; a tentative date for the start of constuction on April 16, 2010; a projected completion date for construction of the new addition on December 15, 2010; and, additional modernization of the existing Janney facility taking place during the summer of 2011.

Janney students are expected to remain in the building, in the existing demountables and on the grounds during construction with the undestanding that a significant proportion of the outdoor playspace will be unavailable during the construction phase. Alternative outdoor options are being explored by the Principal.

JANNEY LISTED AS A HISTORIC LANDMARK

The Janney School was listed as a historic landmark by the Historic Preservation Review Board on November 19, 2009. Both the SIT and the local ANC had voiced opposition to the proposed designation. As a landmark, Janney is subject to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) as administered by the State Historic Preservation Office (District of Columbia office) and the DC Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB).

What is the Janney SIT Facilities Committee?

Janney has been scheduled for a major capital improvement in the upcoming fiscal year. These improvements will include both an addition and modernization of the existing facility. DCPS policy requires that a School Improvement Team (SIT) be established to participate in the development of the education specification and schematic design for the school. The SIT is expected to continue through the end of construction and be available to receive updates, consult on issues that arise during construction, and disseminate information to their peers.

Please note - The SIT Committee that existed prior to April 2009 has been renamed the Local School Restructuring Team (LSRT).

Janney Renovations

Mayor Fenty has announced that a Janney addition will move forward independently of the Tenleytown library project. The Mayor has stated his goal of breaking ground on the Janney addition by January, 2010.

Since March 2009, the Janney School Improvement Team (SIT) Facilities Committee has had a number of meetings with representatives from the Office of Public Education Facilities Management (OPEFM) and their architects to discuss plans for Janney’s slated addition and modernization.

Janney SIT Facilities Committee Members

Members were nominated by the LSRT and reviewed by former Janney Principal, Dr. Karen Crews for final invitation.  The key criteria used in making the ultimate selection for the committee were: for teachers: high-levels of interest in participating, in addition to adequate role representation across teachers, staff, specialists, and administrators and, for parents: high-levels of past engagement with Janney facilities issues for parents, and key areas of content expertise.
